June 2009 in Project365

Yet again all I seem to put on my blog are these reviews… but I have been working on some stuff, and I promise that at least one post in July will be something other than Project365 reviews… no promises on what or how big but just that there will be something else.

Anyway, the selection…

  • Heritage Site visits: Inchmahome Priory and Doune Castle - I always enjoy my heritage site visits and these two provided some fantastic photos
  • First Love - One of my favourite images in a while and in the first 48 hours became my most viewed, commented, and favourited image in DeviantArt, which made me happy.
  • Face Sketches - rather happy with the way these turned out, I wasn’t really using any references just double checking some stuff from people as they sat or walked by in Starbucks
  • Experimenting with ZBrush: here and here - thought I would give the 3D modelling package a trial and so far its been fun if a bit different to use than my last go at modelling

There we go, now to try and see if I cant find something to blog about proper :)

May 2009 in Project365

I really must actually put up more posts here that arent just my look at my Project365… I do have a couple of subjects but when they are ready :). Anyway here is this month, surprising not that many this month… no idea why.

  • Youth Rally 2009 - really had a fantastic time doing this, its always good working with the guys from Alove and this was no exception, while some of the proportions were a bit off I think the feel still across. I just hope they got something from it, the leaders seemed to like it :)
  • Alien Head - I think there is at least one of these a month, so for the sake of tradition :)
  • Ice Mage - I really liked my reworking of my Ice Mage photomanip… but its got a, ahem, cold reception on-line at my normal hangouts with only a few comments compared to other recent works which have been better recieved
  • Lochleven - ah a glorious sunny day at a heritage site, was really fun.

Well there we go… not much else to say, laters… oh except, I got a new car (for those who dont know) as old one was needing so many repairs it was better to say goodbye, so here is my new one… LINK

April 2009 in Project365

So another month gone, another review:

  • The dragon emerges from its winter hibernation - created for a conceptart.org daily sketch
  • Sorceress Waiting - quite happy with this photo-manip, it had been a while and the photo just seemed right
  • By His Stripes - Good Friday piece, a bit ott but still looks quite good, may be another version thats a bit better designed
  • Easter Sunday - created during morning worship on Easter Sunday, quite happy with the way it turned out
  • Berlin 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06 , 07 - it was a great time, there are more photos on facebook, which you can view here.

Roll on next month, hopefully be an interesting one also.

Berlin 2009 - a not so brief summary

So, this is my post about Berlin, written as the week went on… well kinda, it was written in sections over a few days.

Lets see, we can skip the train journey down on the Sunday evening mainly as it was dull, long, and unexciting. I arrived in London and eventually made via tube and taxi to where I was to meet James. I arrived about 1am, after a short conversation with James we tried to get a couple of hours kip for at 4am or so we left for Gatwick. James, Ashley, Nathaniel and myself were driven at this forsaken hour to Gatwick so we got there in plenty of time before the 0625 boarding, so we checked in and headed through security. Annoyingly my good palette knife got taken off as it was not allowed in my hand luggage… that sucked, oh and I had to bin my unopened bottle of bru, while my five ink pots weren’t a problem :(.

The wait for the flight was unexciting but a good chance to start to get to know these three guys who I had never met before that morning. Anyway, skipping past the wait, the boarding, the really small seats, the fact I ended up with a row to myself, and an uneventful flight, we arrived at last in Berlin and got through customs and picked up our weekly travel tickets, which I stupidly paid for in cash rather than with my card so my cash resources took a big hit The ticket however is very cool as it allows travels on all Berlin public transports, be it train, tram, bus, or underground (although I’ve never seen it underground) and you don’t swipe it, show it to anyone, you just get on and travel as long as you carry it.

So Berlin, what little I have seen so far, is a nice city but is covered in graffiti tags, and I mean covered, most of it is the usual low quality rubbish, but there is some amazing stuff as well. This became increasingly apparent as we ventured to where we would stay, a Sunday school room in a block of flats. The American family who we would be working with were there to meet us, the lived five flights above, its one heck of a climb. Anyway, we settled in, took a trip to the gallery to get the keys, waited for the two other team members to arrive, this time from the Netherlands They were a bit late (two hours or so) so the first day was a bit of a bust but we did plan stuff so it wasn’t wasted.

So the team, at the moment stands as follows, this is a REALLY short version of who they are:

  • James – organiser, artist, from London

  • Ashley – from same church as James, on the street team

  • Nathaniel – again same church, also on street team

  • Joax - graffiti artist from Netherlands

  • Erik - also from Netherlands, does some graffiti work but has been mainly involved in street team

The pattern for the next couple of the days would be, wake up, prayers, breakfast/lunch, head to gallery and paint, have tea, chill, then sleep. During REALLYthis of course we would chat, share, discuss and get to know each other better. While it was obvious none of us were really from the same background or shared identical views on a lot of things we all acknowledged the more important common ground. Which put me at ease quickly as it meant I could discuss with them and not worry too much about a massively negative outcome, at least on what we talked about :). Speaking of food, I have to admit that its been relatively interesting to eat out, the prices were ok, averaging 6 euros for a main, about 1.50 euros for a drink, lunch works out at around 2 to 3 euros, which is nothing amazing but you do get decent portions.

So currently its Wednesday night, the artwork is coming along slowly but surely and in general we are getting along well and having a laugh. Personally I’m tired as not only is painting for hours quite draining but I’m sleeping well on my tiny air bed, I think tonight I will try and just sleep on the floor to see it that helps.

Well it did, I slept a lot better, just writing this having got back from an evening in one of Berlin’s parks having a BBQ and a three of spraying onto a legal graffiti wall. That was rather fun, I got to put up my first piece of graffiti, and not only was it legal, but it was on a wall in a different country :). The gallery opening is in two days (Saturday at 7pm) and the pieces for “Who do you say I am?” are coming along slowly but surely, its going to interesting to see how many we get done in under 5 days, in fact probably less than 24hours of work. We also at long last got the flyers today after a serious of small problems, they look fantastic and the street team has been busy putting them up and handing them out.

Friday was a busy day with James, Joax, and myself making sure we headed off early to get a good start so we could be finished, or at least as close as we could, today. We eventually called it a day after about 7 hours of work and the three of us headed to a Vietnamese restaurant for a more expensive but very much worth while meal. Before heading home and chilling out before tomorrow, which would end with the opening of the exhibition.

So on Saturday we finished off the last of the work as the street team put up the work for us. Rhyse, another graffiti artist from Holland, who was joining the team for the next week, After a mad rush and a very rushed price list we opened the exhibition. All in all the opening went well, we had a good number of people throughout the evening. Hopefully the interest will continue next week. I was rather tired so I moved to the next door room to get a better night sleep and give Rhyse more room in the main room we were sleeping in.

On Sunday we met up with the two Americans who lived above us for brunch at an all you can eat brunch place which was rather fantastic.. they had potato croquettes, which made me happy :). I then went my separate way for a few hours as I wanted to do some sightseeing. I managed to see the “TV Tower”, and the holocaust memorial and a bit around it. While taking a seat a wondering if I should go and meet the rest at the park they had went to they arrived, so we went back to the flat for a while to chill before grabbing food. It transpired that the wall we thought was legal, wasn’t, which was a shame.

After some food, the indian for the third time this week, we had some worship, I was asked to share my testimony (probably went on a bit I think) then some of us watched 12 monkeys… great film. Its now 0230 and I leave the “flat” here about 0315 to give myself plenty of time to get to the airport and catch my flight back across to Gatwick. The reason for lots of time is that I am still not 100% sure of the times and how frequent the connections are so, better safe than sorry and it means I can take my time. I arrive in London about 0845 and then aat around midday I catch my train to Edinburgh. The idea of that journey is not a pleasant one, ass I will have been up for around 32 hour when I get to Edinburgh, and I want to stay up until normal bed time… so hopefully this time i’ll get some sleep on the train but I doubt it.

So, in conclusion its been a good week, the art I created was ok, some if good, some bad, but still overall I was happy with it. The team were fun, and I think they got on well with me as I did with them.

Now my mind however focuses on the youth rally this Saturday.

I will try and update this post with images when I get home and get things sorted :).

Very Quick update…

In Berlin. Tired. Group seems really cool. About to start artwork. Cheers for thoughts etc guys. Expect a big post when I get back :)

EDIT (23/o4): things still going well, very tired, have just graffitied my first wall.. legally of course :)

Berlin Approaches…

This coming Sunday evening I will catch a train to London, then at a time in the morning reserved for coming home from a night out, myself and a number of other people, who I have never met, will board a plane to Berlin. Yup, next monday the Artists for Christ Berlin Mission starts… which is kinda cool. While there I’ll hopefully manage to grab some net access here and there to put up posts, update twitter etc, but no guarantees.

I’m still rather nervous about the whole thing, admittedly not as much as I was but the nerves remain. I’ve never felt comfortable around groups of new people, but I can overcome :). This is my first mission that wasn’t a Salvation Army one in quite a few years, in fact even the ones I did years ago had alot of Salvation Army input. I don’t like street work (by which I mean talking to people like clipboard or placard people do), its something I don’t just feel uncomfortable doing its something I don’t think is a useful tool in many cases, but others do and thats cool, I just hope they accept where I come from. its going to be interesting to see these groups of different Christians from all over the place (including some from the USA, and some from around Europe) meeting up and getting to know each other and the differences in our outlook and beliefs while, hopefully, celebrating and concentrating on what unites us. It should be an interesting time, not an easy one, things that are good and worthwhile seldom are easy.

When I get back a week later (the mission is two weeks long) I’ll have a few days then its off to the Youth Rally in Birmingham, which I have to admit I am really looking forward to. It will be an expensive couple of weeks so I’m hoping that I’ll be able to sell some art/prints, both in Berlin and also at the Youth Rally, although that being said I am getting paid for Youth Rally… which is nice :).

So yeah, anyway, if you are of a praying persuasion your prayers for Berlin, the team, etc, would be fantastic, as well as any for me, especially as I try and remain true to who I am in Christ and be who I believe He has called me to be in this situation.

Anyway, laters peeps

March 2009 in Project365

Another month slips by, and April is going to be a busy one for art for me, what with Easter Sunday morning, a week in Berlin, and the Youth Rally (ok thats 2nd May but still). Speaking of Berlin, which if you dont already know is a mission I am going on with Artists for Christ, you can find out more here if you want. Anyway on with the picks:

  • Proverbs 26 - created for Artists for Christ’s look at Proverbs, I thought creating a triptych would be an interesting choice for such a full and complex chapter.
  • Christ and Thorns - created for the last week of my digital drawing class, I was rather pleased with the look and feel of this one.
  • Cartoon heads - just to prove I can draw things that aren’t spikey dark or weird :)
  • Muse v2 - the photo is terrible but it should at least give some idea of what this ink on canvas piece looks like.
  • Homeless Jesus v2 - a digital version of the piece I made back at the Scottish Youth Councils last year
  • Temple -  created for a CGTalk Daily Sketch, had a time limit of 45 min, so quite pleased how it turned out

There we go, another month done, lets see what April and all its stuff brings :)

Poem - Reality of Dreams

(note - this was written late at night quickly while waiting for a download to finish, so, yeah, its a bit random in places… more so that unusual, anyway thought I’d share it)

The quiet embers of the dreamscape call to me,
I can hear the whispers of the silent realm,
I listen as it calls my name.
I am as much a part of it as I am of yours.
In its embrace I find security,
hope,
challenge,
fear,
love,
hate,
greed,
peace,
every emotion purified,
distilled,
and made real in the unreal.
Lord Morpheus unending gaze flickers across his domain,
his gaze deep,
eyes of blackness full of endless possibilities and eternal mysteries.
Watchful.
Protecting those who visit,
however briefly,
guiding the lost,
inspiring the empty.
The ever changing domain shifts again,
quietly,
beautifully,
as it had done for millennia.
Although only briefly we visit,
its siren call leads back again and again,
to sit,
to walk,
to be free in our own minds.
How we long to bring the dream to reality,
even just a little,
without ever realising that dreams are reality,
and reality is but a dream,
one from which we all eventually wake from.
Embrace the unreal,
Be inspired by the unseen,
Dream dreams that bring delight,
Let your dreams become reality,
and wake up,
wake up,
wake up to the real world.
The world beyond,
a reality beyond dreams,
beyond imagination,
beyond expectation,
beyond perfection.
But for now let us sleep,
perchance to dream.
The quiet embers flicker once more,
let their heat warm you as we travel,
once more,
and again.
